The Ardbeg Fermutation is a distinctive 13-year-old single malt scotch whisky, distinguished by its extended fermentation period. This Committee Release bottling originated from an unplanned event in 2007 when the distillery's boiler broke down. Instead of the customary 72-hour fermentation period, the circumstances necessitated a three-week fermentation, which Ardbeg refers to as the longest in their history.
Matured in a mix of first-fill and refill ex-bourbon casks, the Fermutation has been described as yielding a more vibrant, zingy, and fruit-forward spirit, owing to its extended fermentation time. The uniqueness of this offering has led Ardbeg to call it "the sharpest, zingiest, and wildest Ardbeg ever". Despite this, it maintains the Ardbeg signature style of tarry, sooty smoke, balanced against citric sweetness and an oily mouthfeel.
Released in February 2022, this whisky was exclusively available to Ardbeg Committee members, a fan club tasked with protecting the distillery's legacy. The Fermutation is part of Ardbeg's unique lineage of offerings, resulting from a happy accident and providing a distinct variation on their traditional process.
Despite the unexpected origins, the Fermutation stands as a testament to Ardbeg's ability to adapt and experiment, highlighting the impact that fermentation duration can have on the final spirit. As such, it holds a special place in Ardbeg's catalogue, exemplifying the serendipity of whisky production and the capacity for unforeseen circumstances to create a truly unique product.
