The Balvenie Tun 1509 - Batch No. 1 is an expertly curated whisky blend comprising 42 distinct casks. This inaugural batch was assembled under the watchful eye of Malt Master David Stewart, utilising 35 traditional American oak barrels and seven European oak sherry butts chosen from the distillery's aged stocks.
The blending process for this whisky, known as marrying, took place in Tun 1509, a large vat in the distillery's Warehouse 24. Tun 1509 was selected due to its significantly larger size compared to Tun 1401, facilitating the combination of more casks. Over several months within Tun 1509, the individual characteristics of each cask amalgamated, resulting in a unique Balvenie whisky.
Batch No. 1 of Balvenie Tun 1509 is an example of the intricate and exacting process of whisky marrying. To better illustrate this, the whisky is accompanied by a detailed chart, clarifying the main taste characteristics of each constituent cask. This provides whisky enthusiasts an understanding of the complexity of the blending process.
Released in 2014, this inaugural batch of the Balvenie Tun 1509 series stands as a tribute to Balvenie's dedication to crafting distinct and complex whiskies, exhibiting a meticulous blend of flavours at 47.1% ABV.
