The Laphroaig 1960 Vintage Reserve, a single malt whisky, was distilled in 1960, during the period when Bessie Williamson, one of the few recognized female distillery managers, presided over operations. Maturation took place for four decades in Warehouse Number One, the oldest warehouse at the Laphroaig Distillery.
Locally sourced barley and peat from Glenmachrie Moss were used in the production process. This whisky, distilled and bottled by D Johnston & Co., Isle of Islay, was exposed to the coastal air of Laphroaig Bay during its maturation period. The interaction with this unique environment, coupled with the inevitable evaporation, contributes to the distinctive character of the whisky.
This release, dated 2000, comprises only 300 bottles, each at a cask strength of 42.4%. Each bottle is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the then distillery manager, Iain Henderson. The initial distribution was done through Oddbins, enhancing the whisky's status among collectors and connoisseurs.
As one of the oldest official releases from Laphroaig, this 40-year-old Vintage Reserve signifies the distillery's adherence to time-honored distillation methods while ensuring high-quality output. A testament to its enduring whisky-making tradition, the Laphroaig 1960 Vintage Reserve is a significant entry in the distillery's chronicle.
