Bladnoch Distillery is the most southerly distillery in Scotland and is located a mile from Wigtown. Operations at the distillery were halted in 1993 (in 1992 with total production of 1.3 mln litres of spirits) by the previous owner United Distillers (which later became part of Diageo) and then the distillery was sold to a private individual - Raymond Armstrong, a builder from Northern Ireland, on terms that he would not take on whisky production. In 2000, however, with the help of Armstrong's own lobby and the local community, Diageo did agree to restart production.
Raymond Armstrong did not delay in "resurrecting" the distillery and resumed production in 2000.
