The Old Fettercairn distillery (aka Fettercairn or Nethermill) was built in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay. The Gladstone family, including four-time Prime Minister William Gladstone, were the owners of the Fettercairn distillery for over a century until 1939 when it was sold. The neighbouring Fasque Estate is still owned by the family and it also gave its name to one of Fettercairn's whiskies.
The Fettercairn distillery formed the backbone of whisky production for the owners, Whyte & Mackay, producing whiskies destined for Tesco, Asda and many other customers. This aspect of the business is now downsized, which has given Fettercairn a chance to show its qualities as a single malt whisky, over recent years.
