The Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch No. 5 is a meticulously crafted single malt whisky, composed of a mix of nine casks - five traditional American oak whisky casks and four European oak sherry butts. These casks were personally selected from Warehouse 24 by the Malt Master, David Stewart. This unique combination of casks contributes to the distinct identity of the whisky.
Characterized by its limited release, this batch includes only 2,862 bottles. The casks employed in its creation range in age, with the youngest whisky being 21 years old, while the oldest reaches back to 1966. Notably, the predominant source of the sherried whisky in the blend comes from the 1970s era.
As a practice of the distillery, the whisky was allowed to rest for several months in Tun 1401, the distillery's traditional oak marrying vessel. This process permits the spirits from the different casks to intermingle and integrate, creating a harmonious single malt expression.
Batch No. 5 of the Tun 1401 series includes whisky casks numbered 5241, 7044, 17894, 2384, 439, and sherry butts numbered 6444, 13144, 13838, 978. This release was exclusive to the UK market, contributing to its rarity and appeal to collectors.
